Understanding CDL Basics
A CDL is a specialized license required to operate large, heavy, or hazardous material-carrying vehicles in the United States. It ensures drivers are trained and qualified to operate commercial vehicles safely.
A Class A CDL allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds. This includes tractor-trailers, tankers, and flatbeds.
A Class B CDL covers single vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more or towing a vehicle less than 10,000 pounds. Examples include box trucks, buses, and dump trucks.
A Class C CDL is for operating vehicles designed to transport 16+ passengers (including the driver) or vehicles transporting hazardous materials (HazMat) not covered by Class A or B.
A CDL endorsement allows you to operate specialized types of commercial vehicles. Common endorsements include:
-H: Hazardous Materials
-N: Tank Vehicles
-P: Passenger Transport
-S: School Bus
-T: Double/Triple Trailers
You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL for intrastate (within-state) driving, and 21 years old to drive commercially across state lines or to transport hazardous materials.
The FMCSA is a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation that regulates the trucking industry to ensure safety standards, training requirements, and licensing processes for commercial drivers.
